Fostoria Early Childhood Center
Fostoria, OH
McCall Sharp Genet Architecture provided full architectural services for this new 18,600 square foot facility that is a multi-agency complex design for the health, welfare and education of young children and their families. The structure will house facilities for the Seneca County General Health District, Fostoria Community Hospital, Help Me Grow Early Intervention and Head Start. Due to the history of Fostoria as a Railroad Hub, the design of the Early Childhood Center took on the theme of a railroad depot. This became a unique overall design approach for both the interior and exterior offering the ability to create both playfulness and identity to the structure. The facility has eight classrooms, a large muscle play area, full service kitchen, offices, medical and health offices and a multi-purpose room. The facility has several design features specific to small children, which include:
- Heated floors;
- Low windows in the classroom dividing walls to allow children on the floor to expereince activites in other spaces;
- Furniture & fixtures with no sharp corners;
- Various textures low on the walls to allow children different sensory (touch) experiences;
- Dutch doors on children’s restrooms to allow teacher monitoring of the entire classroom;
- Large muscle group play area with high ceilings, large exterior windows and a train track in the
rubber flooring with stop circles outside of each depot style classroom entry.
